Session Idea: Print

In broad strokes, here are some topics that could be raised in this session.

  • The uncertain future of the Pbook
  • Print on demand
  • What’s new in print?
  • Is there still a place for the printed book now and later?
  • What books are naturally suited to print?
  • Cool things a print book can do that an iPad can’t

We’re counting on your participation to make this session a success – but we’ve hedged our bets by asking Doug Thompson, Neil Anstey, and the Book Bakery to help guide this conversation. Let them know what you want to discuss in the comments below.

  1. Where does print on demand fit into the bookselling/publishing world, particularly given that it exists about half-way between print distribution and digital distribution? Will it continue to grow within that gap?

Look at Cory Doctorow’s new experiment WITH A LITTLE HELP – released via various Espresso Book Machines using various covers that the customer choses at the time of purchase/printing as well as allowing customers to submit notifications of typos/etc (to which he’ll fix and add a footnote acknowledging the person who submitted it) – http://craphound.com/walh/

  2. There is no “uncertain future” for the printed book.

How to balance economy and quality with POD? Will print book buyers accept a lower-quality POD product or will the prevalence of ebooks make printed book buyers want an “art object”?
(speaking as one who deals with POD and offset printing on a daily basis, and has seen the benefits and pitfalls of both)
